The Mugler Spring/Summer 2012 fashion show began with a short film featuring Lady Gaga. Creative director –and Lady Gaga’s stylist– Nicola Formichetti called upon Inez and Vinoodh as film directors while Lady Gaga also acted as music director with her remix of Black Jesus + Amen Fashion and Heavy Metal Lover.
“I am a Mugler woman, don’t fuck with me.” which Lady Gaga sang at the start of the actual film screened during the Paris show was conspicuously omitted from this film edit. Lady Gaga with buck-teeth and pigtails; the video made no sense at all unless you are a Gaga fan. This is Nicola Formichetti’s second outing as creative director with designer Sébastien Peigné and it was obvious he was still banking on Lady Gaga’s popularity although she did not walk in the show this time round. Maybe she won’t even be featured next year. Hopefully this will mark a step away from Nicola Formichetti’s over-reliance on Lady Gaga. More fashion than entertainment is what the Mugler brand needs.
For Mugler Spring/Summer 2012, Nicola Formichetti presented a slightly more wearable ensemble unlike his latex and sheer-laden Fall 2011 show. Cut-outs in different shapes and panels in odd patterns, some colour-blocked, in a structured and slender silhouette set in a mostly neutral colour palette were the highlights.
A meek attempt at deconstruction? Tame or innovative? You decide.
