Surprisingly –or not– first-time Womenswear Designer of the Year nominees Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen of The Row edged out the Proenza Schouler boys and Marc Jacobs. This proves that celebrity or not, if you have what it takes, you can make the cut. Yay for Kanye West and co.

Johnny Depp as a Fashion Icon? Right. Moving on.

Although less spectacular –in my opinion– than the Met Gala red carpet (fashion’s red carpet equivalent of the Oscars), the 2012 CFDA Fashion Awards red carpet had some standouts. Check out what caught my eye below.

Lara Stone for Vogue US July 2011

With the stunning photo of Emma Watson by Mario Testino on the cover of Vogue US July 2011 on everyone’s lips, I would like to divert your attention to a beautiful and captivating film noir inspired editorial within the pages of that very issue. This editorial features Lara Stone in the leading role and Frida Gustavsson in fall’s latest collections accompanied by actor Alexander Skarsgard. Styled by Grace Coddington, a subtle melodramatic story of a femme fatale entitled Spellbound is told through the lens of Peter Lindbergh with significant usage of low-key lighting. Enjoy!

‘An air of smoky, 1940’s film noir chic permeated the most glamourous fall collections’ -Grace Coddington

Lara wears a lavender Gucci fox jacket and a pin-striped wool skirt from Ralph Lauren Collection.

Lara wears a Marc Jacobs silk-satin dress with a patent waistband. Bag and boots, all from Marc Jacobs. Frida wears a Marc Jacobs tweed jacket with sheepskin collar and skirt. Beret, handbag and boots all from Marc Jacobs. Alexander wears a Tom Ford suit, Prada shirt and Dolce & Gabbana tie.

Lara wears a Proenza Schouler velvet dress with chevron patterns and Tabitha Simmons pumps.

Lara wears a Balenciaga printed silk dress.

Lara wears a Yves Saint Laurent silk blouse, satin trousers and belt. Alexander wears a Ralph Lauren Purple Label suit and Hermes tie.

Lara wears a Miu Miu embroidered dress with mink shoulder detailing and Gucci slouch hat.

Lara wears a Rochas silk bustier, wool and silk blend pants and heels.

Frida (dancing) wears a Nina Ricci sky blue radzimir dress with black tulle. Lara wears a Oscar de la Renta velvet dress and earrings.

Laura Love (left -wearing apron), Lisa Love’s daughter, wears a Louis Vuitton silk dress with leather collar and boots. Lara (centre) wears a Louis Vuitton embroidered silk dress, gloves, belts and pumps. Frida (right -pulling up stockings) wears a Louis Vuitton cashmere romper and pumps.

Glad that they included a black and white photo, it wouldn’t be film noir without it. And I think I might just know what I want to do for my next collection for school. Love the calm grandeur and Lara’s alluring gaze. Kudos to the team for going one up; a perfect complement to the cover.
